  • Queen City Transportation Museum - Cumberland, MD
Welcome to the Queen City Transportation Museum! Visit the Queen City Transportation Museum and see the Dream of James Richard Thrasher. Mr. Thrasher had a passion for horse-drawn vehicles and spent about thirty years of his life collection and restoring vehicles ranging from wagons to automobiles. He used many vehicles in local parades and a few even traveled into movies. In 1977 Mr. Thrasher opened a museum to display his collection in the Midland School, which he attended as a child. Upon his death Allegany County purchased the collection and opened the Thrasher Carriage Museum in Frostburg. However, the site could display only about one-third of the collection with the remainder placed in storage. Today Mr. Thrasher's dream to display his collection has come true with two sites exhibiting a legacy of early transportation and history.

  • Surratt House Museum/John Wilkes Booth/Abraham Lincoln/Civil War/Assassination/Mary Surratt
Welcome to the Surratt House Museum Built in 1852 as a middle-class plantation home, historic Surratt House also served as a tavern and hostelry, a post office, and polling place during the crucial decade before the Civil War. During the war, it was a safehouse for the Confederate underground which flourished in Southern Maryland. It was the country home of Mary Surratt, first woman to be executed by the United States government after being found guilty of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Restored in 1976 by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, today the museum presents a variety of programs and events, recapturing the history of mid-19th century life and focusing on the fascinating web of the Lincoln conspiracy.
